MAKI5 - Melbourne - Adelaide; via Great Ocean Rd, The Grampians, Kangaroo Island
Duration: 5 Days, 4 Nights
We begin the day with a city tour of Melbourne. We then head to the beautiful coastline passing through Geelong,
Victoria's 2nd largest city. We travel along the cliff tops of the spectacular Great Ocean Road via Lorne. We
then travel along cool mountain streams to Skenes Creek Lodge to enjoy the beautiful sunset colours over the
ocean.
Overnight: Coastal Motel, Apollo Bay (DBB)
We depart Skenes Creek Lodge after breakfast. We travel along cool mountain streams with tall Mountain Ash and Beech
Forest and lush Rainforest of the Otway Ranges. After our lunch stop we travel to Port Campbell National Park where
time and the powerful Southern Ocean have created spectacular rock formations. We then wind along through Warnambool
to Tower Hill National Park, from where we get one of the best close encounters with koalas and other native
wildlife in Australia. After leaving this unique area we head north to Dunkeld, then into the hidden corners of the
Grampians to arrive for our overnight stop at Halls Gap.
Overnight: Colonial Motor Inn, Halls Gap (DBB)
This morning we follow the ranges of the Grampians National Park. We leave the state of
Victoria via the lovely small town of Cavendish and then travel to Mt Gambier and its
beautiful crater lakes.
The most unusual of these lakes, the Blue Lake, changes colour
twice a year. Leaving Mt Gambier we track through farmland and dense pine forests to the
Limestone Coast fishing harbours of Beachport and Robe for our overnight stop.
Overnight: Robe Haven Motel, Robe (DBB)
We travel along the coastline to Kingston another famous lobster fishing town and fishing port.
From here we travel to the Coorong National Park a unique coastal wetland and lagoon from which
once again our 4WD vehicles allow us to explore much more. After a coffee break in the park we
enjoy much more birdlife and coastal serenity of this national park.
We then shall view Lake Alexandrina at the mouth of Australia's longest river system, the Murray River (200km),
arriving at Wellington for a lunch break.
We travel through Milang and Goolwa before arriving at Victor Harbour and enjoy a short break
in this lovely town. We then drive along some very scenic trails in the Fleurieu Peninsula
region as we travel to Cape Jarvis. Here we embark on the Kangaroo island Ferry to Penneshaw,
arriving at American River to overnight at Kangaroo Island Lodge.
Overnight - Kangaroo Island Lodge (DBB)
Firstly we head off to visit Kingscote, the largest town on Kangaroo Island and an attractive
small settlement gazing over the waters of the Bay of Shoals. We then visit Flinders Chase
National Park, which takes up most of the western half of the island and, is one of the
largest national parks in South Australia. From here we view some seal colonies and hidden
corners. On our return across the Island we will visit Remarkable Rocks, Kelly Hill
Caves and Admirals Arch before traveling onto Seal Bay Conservation Park to see a sea
lions colony. We then arrive at Penneshaw to join our cruise back to the mainland.
