CHE1 - Cairns - Highlands Explorer.

Departing your accommodation in Cairns at 7am, we travel by luxury 6 seat Toyota GXL 4wd south to Gordonvale and then up the Mulgrave Valley as we ascend the Gillies Highway to the Atherton tablelands. Eucalypt forest gives way to rainforest as we soak in the magnificent views and hear stories of the dreamtime from our indigenous guides. Our first stop is the charming crater Lake Barrine for morning tea and a walk to the giant kauri trees. After another stop at Lake Eacham and the opportunity for a swim, we continue through the historic town of Yungaburra, where we stop with the chance to view the elusive platypus and on to the amazing Curtain fig tree.

Driving through the rich dairying region, we make a stop at the Malanda Environment Centre and Milanda Falls, a known habitat of the unique Lumholtz's Tree Kangaroo, before making our way to the delightful Millaa Millaa Falls. The waterfall spectacular continues as we circuit the waterfall way en route to our lunch at the Falls Cafe. After lunch we make our way by forest tracks to Davies Creek Falls and a wonderful swimming and photo opportunity.

The route we take from here through the rainforest-shrouded mountain is only accessible by special permit. Consequently we will travel (weather permitting) through areas rarely visited as we stop at Bare Hill Aboriginal rock paintings, where our indigenous guides can interpret their ancient images. The pristine rainforest continues as we finally arrive at Copperlode Dam, Cairn's water supply and a wonderful body of water with a spectacular highland backdrop.

After a stop at the cafe for afternoon tea and to soak in the vista, we descend the windy road through the rainforest to arrive at spectacular vistas of Cairns late in the afternoon. Completing our highland circuit, we drop you back at your accommodation after a wonderful day of waterfalls, spectacular tableland scenery and real mountain four wheel driving through the rainforest.
